My dance figures, all constructed of reclaimed wood (the species of which I am therefore unsure), are inspired by the dancers of MADCO (Modern American Dance Company), who I have photographed for many years. Each figure is based on a particular photograph (the dancer is named in the title), and I have tried to replicate the spirit of the poses, which taken together communicate an ethos of optimism, taking liberties with their various elements. I have just begun work on 2-dimensional versions of these figures, which bear little relation to the series of abstract paintings I made in recent years or to the politically inspired paintings with George Washington as a mythological figure I made before that or to the religion-centric images I created in oil on aluminum before that. If there is one constant in my practice, it is a periodic and rather jarring change in the direction (and often medium) of my work.
