Man in the Box - Stage as Sculpture drives performance movements.
Man in a Box, originally performed by performance artist Tom Brady in New York in 1979 is a well seasoned work. Each reiteration, however, brings an ever deepening understanding while commenting on the state of being. The current project is the result of an intense collaboration between two self determined artists - Brady and long time collaborator Monica Newsam.
Man in the Box is a requiem honoring and at times cherishing the individual challenges, reversals, failings, insights, generosity and forward thrusts in the journey to wisdom.
The audience pays witness to the collision of one's final moments with the recollections of the younger self - and the life well lived. In the dialogue between one's youthful past and aging now, the two performers create movement vocabulary through the complex sculptural space. They share youthful insights sending them forward to remind us that wisdom is not found solely in years earned while recognizing that age does provide the young and ambitious needed perspective.
Man in the Box takes back one's history from those who scheme to write it for me. Man in the Box is an observation - how to value and accept lessons from youth, clear, struggled, sometime dispassionate, remorseful, unforgiving to ultimately arrive in a state of humility and compassion . . . effectively writing the story for oneself. What have I done that really matters - what will be left of me when I am gone?
The conflicts that arise between wisdom and the desire to prove oneself play out on the large scale installation that once started out as a simple box.
Brady will perform this piece at ANNONYArts studio Satori this season. He also will be taking Man in a Box on the road to Links Hall Chicago. Brady has fostered an artists exchange with Links Hall in an effort to open a dialogue with local artists of other urban areas. We can learn from the conflict each community has suffered and grown from just as the wise self and the innocent man can learn from their moment in time.
